I wasn’t going to use any of my old blogs from elsewhere as they are still around should you wish to view them. However I have had a rather busy weekend and don’t have time to ‘create’. So here’s a cheeky reprint from over a year ago some may find familiar! I picked this as it still comes up in arguments all the time! Enjoy :
Just reading new scientist (Ra) for fun and yet again there are physicists questioning the unbelievably lucky coincidence of the cosmological constant(s). If some fundamental constants were a just a little different this universe would be inhospitable to life. Amazing. This means that the universe must have started from a ‘just-so’ configuration of a singularity. What a fantastic coincidence. This must be a sign of the universe being made for us. NO! Did these people never study even rudimentary evolution? Of course the constants (and therefore the universe’s initial state) are ‘just-so’ for life, we evolved into this universe not the otherway around. Whatever the intial state of the universe, however improbable, life (if it develops) would evolve to fit in ‘just-so’. Saying the above, Re. change of constants leads to an absence of life, just shows a gaping deficiency in both understanding and imagination. Our life would not survive given a small shift in universal constants but there may be other forms of sentience we could not conceive of. Or there may not be. What there is however is no huge coincidence that this universe suits us. There’s oxygen, so we breathe it, there’s carbon so we’re made of it and the universal constants are as they are so we evolved around them. We couldn’t have evolved any other way.
I hate people.
